  • Adams elected in 1796 (Federalist)
  • Jefferson elected vice president (Republican)
  • political parties were part of The election process
  • federalists passed four controversial laws
    • Federalists believed necessary to protect the country from troublemakers (and cause problems for Republicans)
    • Republicans believed were an attack on their party
  • Sedition act
    • Federalists believed would punish those who published lies intended to destroy the government
    • Republicans believed was an attack on the rights of free speech and press
  • Virginia and Kentucky adopted ‍‍the resolution opposing the acts
    • believed state laws could overrule the federal laws if they thought it was unconstitutional - "States' Rights"
  • In 1800 the capital moved to Washington D.C.
